Tilly + Cub - the company who believe in giving back + giveaway
As we are fast approaching December the season of giving - id love you to meet a very special lady behind equally as special company .You don't often meet a company who sells not only beautiful products for whole family, but also believe in giving back - especially being a small business -who specialize in baskets - from beautiful mosses baskets to a home ware baskets which are handcrafted in Ghana . Each and every basket is unique and the feel and detail shows a lot of skill .
I have caught up with the wonderful Jo Harris who is the owner of Tilly + Cub to find out more about her company , her passions and why in this day and age giving back is important
1. Can you tell our readers about yourself and your brand ?
We are Tilly and Cub: handmade fairtrade, natural fibre Moses and Homeware baskets. We being me; Jo, my daughter Matilda (aka Tilly) and Cub my soon to be born baby nicknamed Cub. I am very proud of both the origins of our baskets, and that we donate 5% of sales to various charities including Sands, Afrikids and PANDAS Uk.
2 .What piece are you most proud of , or one that has a significance to you?
Ooh that's like asking me to choose a favourite child! We have just launched toy/mini Moses baskets which I really love as the inspiration to have them woven came from my daughter becoming a big sister. It's an exact replicas of the full sized versions and that 5% of their Sales goes to Solving Kids Cancer. And I adore the idea of them being part of other families childhood memories. So they feel pretty special to me
3. Can you tell me some of your strengths that really helped you in your design journey ?
I think Motherhood has helped me develop my ability to function on minimal sleep, to multi task, and grit my teeth when required.
4. What would be your tips for anyone thinking of starting their own business in design ?
You don't have to have an "arty" background. Of course there are hugely skilled and qualified individuals out there, but I also know so many fantastic design based businesses where people have come from different Industries. Not taking GCSE Art doesn't exclude you from exploring a creative channel.
5. Can you tell me about your greatest high in your career ?
Seeing photos of the first few customers babies in their baskets was a joy and every subsequent picture is too. Plus making the donations to charities really makes me feel proud of our customers. Just seeing a basket being enjoyed in someone's home really makes my day.
6 .What was your greatest failure and what did you learn from that?
It's a huge learning curve starting any business. We've wasted money in incorrect packaging, had stock delays, parcels go missing. But it's all part of the process.
7 . Who has impacted you most in your design journey and how?
Many of our baskets designs are chosen by their individual craftspeople which I love. The idea that they are going with their mood and feelings to make something truly unique. But in terms I my design input I would say it's been hugely customer led. I love the feedback- someone might say- ooh I'd love a black handle- or a different size, or mention their vegan and then vegan Moses basket is born
8. Who is your design or style icon ?
Can I say my daughter? I bloody love that she can style out a bubble bee onsie and tutu and Wellies with absolute sass
9 What do you think has been your brands super power?
The Tilly and Cub extended family- aka our customers, and social media followers. They have been so enthusiastic and supportive and we'd be nothing without them. That along with the undeniable beauty of the baskets and craftsmanship behind them.
10 Were you artistic as a child?
You know I think all children innately are, and then sadly it often gets lost due to academia, inhibitions or cranky art teachers.
11. Since Style Squeeze is all about small spaces - how would you squeeze most of small square footage (your tips suggestions )
We moved from a large home in rural Oz to a two up two down in the Surrey suburbs. My advice would be cull stuff- whether it's a minimalist challenge (for example you give away one item on the first of the month two on the second etc), or impose a month of no purchasing- really shifting your mindset about less is more helps. If you can't bare to be parted- try hiding things in the shed or under the bed for a couple of months- I bet you don't miss them, and then you realise you really don't need them anymore.
12 .What do you do in your spare time?
Sleep! As I'm due with my second baby very soon I am trying to prioritise rest in this "calm before the storm" period.
13 Do you put limitations on the work in terms of brave and bold or is there no fucks given?
I try and stay true to what I like and want to do and achieve so I guess minimal fucks.
